Roofing Crew Needed

This weekend, our Central Church of Christ Youth Ministry (CYM) are continuing tornado relief work throughout our community.  This "Spring Into Action" weekend includes a variety of service projects to help those recovering from the April 27 storms.

As a part of that initiative, a need has been identified for a family who needs their roof tarped.  We need four men, a ladder, and a large roof tarp.  If you can work with our youth to help this family, please let us know.

As always, thank you for your continued support!

Turning the Page

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven."  Ecclesiastes 3:1

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!  We cannot say it enough.  What an incredible two and a half weeks we have had at Central Church of Christ.  It all started bright and early on the morning after the storm with work crews meeting at the church and going out to clear debris, cut trees, salvage memories and love families within our own church who were impacted by the storm.  Later that day, ladies gathered to cook a wonderful spaghetti supper for all of us who had been working all day and who were without power.  The next day, hot dog lunches and coolers of bottled water were delivered to these families and another meal was prepared as many of our members came to the church building to wash clothes and enjoy a few moments in a building that had lights and air conditioning!

As each day passed, our outreach grew.  Neighbors of church members began to be blessed by our chainsaw crews.  Word got out that Central was "making a big difference" in the tornado relief effort, and donations started coming into the building.  We set up two folding tables outside the kitchen and marveled at how generous everyone was.  We had no idea what was about to happen!

Over the weekend, more donations came in, and on Sunday, we came together to cry together, comfort each other and worship our King.  Our church family who had power were incredibly kind to prepare an outstanding lunch for all of us who did not have power.  We enjoyed a much needed time of fellowship with each other.  The bounty was so plentiful that we packed up plates and set out delivering them in devastated areas around Limestone County.  By Sunday, the magnitude of how widespread the damage was became our new reality.  The shock wore off, and we got serious about helping in a big way.

The following week, fliers were created and distributed all around the community.  We had announcements placed on all the local radio and television stations.  What started with some spaghetti, hot dogs, bottled water and 2 little tables quickly grew and grew each day.  When half the gym was full, we couldn't believe it.  By the end of the week, the entire gym was full of food, cleaning supplies, baby items, kitchen essentials, linens, personal hygiene items, toys, school supplies and furniture.  We received donations from so many in our community and also from Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.  Complete strangers whom none of us knew drove up with truckloads of supplies and asked us to help get them out to people in need.  We are so thankful for all of these donations, and we are happy to say that we did just that.

Throughout that week, we helped dozens of families find temporary housing.  Through the monetary donations we received, we helped pay deposits, buy mattresses, and create new "homes" for so many who had lost everything.  We had so many God moments--a huge need would arise, such as a need for a house or a washer and dryer, and literally within minutes, someone would call or email with the answer to our prayer.  Such a blessing to witness God's influence and comfort for these families in need!  We helped families in Limestone County, Madison County, Phil Campbell, Cullman and beyond.  Countless meals were prepared and shared.  As our food and supplies would run alarmingly low, another truck would call and come, replenishing what had been taken.

So many hours, so many volunteers, so many donations and so many memories--all for the glory of God.  Our prayer is that all these families who have been helped will thank God, not us, for all these things have come from Him.  We also pray that He will be glorified as His children have been about the business of serving our community.  We praise Him in this storm!

Even today, a co-worker of one of our members drove up and gave us a car--just signed over the title and asked us to give it to someone who needs it, literally hours after we heard of a family who needed a car.  So many amazing stories such as this prove to us that He is real and working in all of our lives.  God is good all the time.

Now, we are turning the page in our tornado relief efforts.  Tomorrow we will be boxing up the remaining items we have in our gym and moving them to a smaller storage room.  It is time for us to shift gears, as most of the storm victims in our county are now in temporary housing and on their way.  Our new focus in the coming week will be to provide ongoing support to these families as well as to expand our outreach to some of the smaller towns in North Alabama who have not received as much attention or help.

As we turn this page, we ask that you please let anyone affected by the storms know that we are still here for them.  If someone has a need, please call 256-232-2014, and our members will work with you to help you in any way we can.

We also ask for your continued monetary support.  The road to recovery is long, and we will continue to accept monetary donations to buy whatever supplies are needed for these families and for communities in North Alabama.  You may continue to donate in two ways:
  1. Mail a check to Central Church of Christ Tornado Relief, 320 U.S. Highway 31, Athens, AL 35611.
  2. Donate via Paypal at www.central-churchofchrist.com
At this time, we want to thank all of you for your time, your donations and your continued prayers for all those affected by the storms of April 27, 2011.  You have all inspired us with your endless support, generosity and concern for those in need.  On behalf of all those who have come through our Relief Center, we THANK YOU and THANK GOD for the blessings of these life-changing weeks.

So many people have told us we were changing lives over these past weeks.  Actually, the lives we have changed have been our own.  Our eyes have been opened to the tremendous needs all around us for the love of Jesus, and we know we will never be the same.  We pray that we will continue to serve as fountains of His love in a world starving for grace.  May we continue to shine the light of hope and peace that only comes through Jesus Christ as we continue on our journey to Love God, Love Each Other and Serve the World.

Weekend Challenge

"They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life."  1 Timothy 6: 18-19

As the weekend approaches, those of us who have jobs look forward to a few days off.  Those of us who have kitchens full of food look forward to a night out at a restaurant.  Those of us with children look forward to spending time with our families at the baseball and soccer fields.  Those of us who were not devastated by the force of nature two weeks ago, in other words, are getting on with our lives as normal.

All around us, though, are families who were devastated by the storms of 4-27-11.  Daddies have lost their jobs because their business was blown away.  Mommies don't know what to cook because just before the storm, they spent all their grocery money filling the refrigerator and freezer, and then they had to throw it all away after days without power.  Children who once played weekend sports no longer can because there is no extra gas money in the family budget for all those trips to town, and Mommy and Daddy are too busy anyway trying to clean up all those trees that fell in the yard or on their house.

What is "normal" for these families?  Will they ever feel "normal" again, ever look forward to a Friday night meal out at a restaurant again?  How many months will it take to find a new job?  How will they make the ends meet in the meantime?  How will they survive now that they have "survived" this storm?

This weekend, I challenge you to do something a little different.  Gather your family together and go spend a few hours with a family affected by the storm.  Just show up with your chainsaw, rakes, and garbage bags and help them clean up their yard.  Don't call first--they will tell you they are "fine" and don't need the help, but they will love you for helping.  Invite some friends over who have lost their job and feed them a great meal, or take them out to eat your treat.

If you live out of state and cannot do any of these things, accept our weekend challenge this way:  instead of spending your money on a meal out at a restaurant, donate the amount you would have spent to Central Church of Christ via Paypal at http://www.central-churchofchrist.com/.  One hundred percent of the donations we are receiving towards Tornado Relief are going to the people who need our help.  We are using this money to help them pay their rent, their utility bills, and their grocery bills.  Tell your family why you are donating the money instead of going out to eat, and then stop and pray together as a family for your Christian family living in areas impacted by the storms.  Your prayers will sustain and uplift, and our Father will continue to provide the comfort and reassurance they so desperately need.

May God bless you all--have a great weekend!

Supplies and Donations Needed for our Relief Center

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest of blessings if we do not give up."  Galations 6:9

The energy of our volunteers is unbelieveable.  In particular, Central Church of Christ has been blessed with some AMAZING ladies whose spirit of generosity and love is inspirational.  Please stop reading this blog and bow your head to thank God right now for the blessings of these incredible women.  Praise Him for creating these women who have worked morning, noon and night organizing, re-organizing, giving, gathering, praying, crying, laughing, and LOVING their community.  Our Relief Center has been a blessing for so many in our area, and these women have made it all happen.  THANK YOU to our ladies!

Now that you have praised God for these volunteers, please come and help us help our neighbors.  These ladies are not growing weary of doing good--in fact, their energy seems to be growing as they are fueled to serve the Lord in this work.  The word has gotten out, and so many families impacted by the storm have found refuge and help in our Relief Center.  Some of our supplies have gotten low, so please stop by and donate the following items:
  • Non-perishable foods:  cereal, tuna, canned fruits and vegetables, granola bars, breakfast bars, snack crackers like Goldfish or Cheese-Its, drinks other than water such as Gatorade or juice boxes, peanut butter and jelly.
  • Baby items
  • Cleaning supplies:  spray cleaners, trash bags, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, Comet, etc.
  • Personal hygiene items:  shampoo, conditioner, brushes, deodorant, feminine products, shaving cream, razors, soap, etc.
  • Pet supplies:  dog and cat food
Thank you for your continued generosity.  We truly appreciate all of your support so much as we continue to provide for the victims of these terrible storms.

Shelter In the Storm

"Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty."  Psalms 91:1

One of the most rewarding experiences of the past week (and there have been many) has been the opportunity to help families and children who were displaced by the storm find temporary housing.  So many families escaped from closets, storm shelters, basements and cellars to walk into a nightmare.  In a matter of a few terrifying seconds, the storms of April 27 ripped through wood, bricks and steel, leveling entire neighborhoods and destroying property all over Limestone County and the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.

In those first few hours and days, story after story about lives spared or only one closet still standing in a house were passed around the community.  Families were thankful for God's hand of protection over their lives.  However, soon the reality set in that they were now, impossibly, homeless.  Many of these new homeless families have moved in with relatives or friends, some took refuge in a hotel room, while still others struggled to rest on a cot in a makeshift shelter.  Some slept for a few nights in a tent in their former yard, while still others slept in their cars.

We at Central are so proud to have worked with different teams of volunteers to help place families in temporary housing.  As of this posting, all the children in the Athens City School system who were displaced by the storm are now sleeping in a safe place.  As I was relaying this story to a friend today, she asked, "Where did you find all those rental houses?"  My answer--God found them!  Technology has been a wonderful tool for good over the past few days.  When we discovered a need, our volunteers instantly sent out text message blasts, we posted a need on Facebook, listed the need on this blog, or simply worked the phones, calling everyone in our respective networks to find available housing.  Within a few hours, in some cases minutes, we would receive answers to our requests.  God has answered many prayers with Facebook postings this week!

Another blessing has been to see how Central volunteers have worked with volunteers from other organizations to secure property, furniture, and even toys for these families and children.  Teachers, administrators, room Moms, and strangers, all tirelessly worked together to clean rental houses, set up furniture, hang blinds, make beds, stock pantries, buy new toys and bicycles, and even find washers and dryers to create a new home for these families who have suffered so much tragedy.  What a blessing for that family to walk into a clean and furnished home and to be able to rest in a bed lovingly made by a stranger who only wants the best for them!

So many of you have been so kind to send us monetary donations, and we sincerely appreciate your generosity.  We have been able to instantly use that money to bless these families, paying for security deposits, utility hook ups, first and second months' rent, etc.  We are also so thankful to all of you who have donated furniture, appliances, kitchen essentials, and even linens, pillows and blankets.  These resources have quickly gone to these families in their "new" homes, and we couldn't have done it without working together with so many in our community.  As many of you know, it takes weeks for insurance or FEMA to come through with payouts for storm victims, and your generosity has made it possible for us to alleviate that financial stress and strain and just take care of these families in their time of need.

As we were out driving and handing out food and supplies to storm victims the weekend after the storm, I started crying.  My 9-year-old son asked me what was wrong.  I told him that I was so thankful we were all safe, and it made me so sad to see so many homes lost, in some cases just a few blocks away from where we live.  He said, "Mommy, sticks and bricks don't make homes.  It's the people who live inside who make it home."  He was so right and so wise in his comforting words to me, and we are praying blesssings on these families in the weeks ahead in their new homes.

We describe people as being "tough as nails," "having nerves of steel," or being "stronger than a brick wall."  On April 27, nails, steel and bricks were no match for these horrible storms.  The true strength of those storms; however, came not in a description of the weather.  The strength that has been amazing to witness is the true grit of these survivors and the volunteers who have been fighting for them.  The strength of our community in this time of crisis has been a mighty force for good.  And, most important of all, the strength of faith in our Father has been proven, as we have learned that true shelter can only be found in Him.  Home is truly where the heart is, and our heart is with all of you.  May God bless you all!

Driver for Cullman Supplies

We need a volunteer to take a truck-load of supplies (in their vehicle) to Cullman tomorrow.  If you are available, contact Ashley Dobbs or Tanya Griffin.

School Supplies for Rainsville

The schools in Rainsville, AL are in need of supplies for kindergarten through 12th grade students for the rest of this school year and for their summer program.  Items needed include:
  • binders
  • pens
  • pencils
  • notebooks
  • paper
  • crayons
We hope to deliver these supplies to Rainsville this Thursday or Friday (May 12 or 13).  If you would like to contribute, bring the supplies to the church building and we will set them aside for these students.

Come, All Who Are Weary and Burdened, and I Will Give You Rest

"Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."  Matthew 11:28

We at Central are so thankful for the peace like a river that comes from our Heavenly Father during times such as these.  What a blessing to be able to turn to Him in prayer and make all our requests known to Him, and, even better, to know that He is listening and answering us!  We have had so many examples of answered prayers throughout the past few days as He has provided exceedingly, abundantly more of all the supplies our neighbors have needed.

During our work with tornado victims, we have noticed that many are so uneasy as they walk through the door.  Just like many of us, these families never expected to have the word "victim" associated with their name, and it is incredibly difficult to seek out assistance.  We have walked through the center with these precious souls, encouraging them to fill their baskets with supplies as they hate to take too much, preferring to leave it for others in need.

Perhaps many of you reading this blog have been impacted by the storms, and you, too, have not wanted to come to our Relief Center, thinking instead that you will take care of yourself and leave all the donations for "people who really need them."

Whether we like it or not, we all need help as we travel down life's long and winding road.  Many of us learned that lesson as we struggled through 5 or more days with no electricity.  We were forced to rely on our family and friends for basic necessities such as a hot shower, a hot meal, or even the use of a washer and dryer.  I have reflected since the lights came back on that perhaps God was trying to teach us a lesson in those dark days.  Perhaps we have all become a little too self-reliant and needed a reminder that WE NEED HIM--every hour, every minute, every second of every day.  He used our friends, neighbors and family members as tools to take care of us, His children, in our time of need.  In the same way, I believe He is leading us in this relief effort to take care of even more of His children who are in need.

As the donations continue to pour into Central, we are longing to help and to serve.  Please encourage ALL those you know who have suffered as a result of these storms.  These donations are not just for those who have lost everything or those who are the most desperate--these donations are for all of us who may need a little help putting the pieces back together in our lives.  It is a blessing for us to be able to help, and all these things come from Him, not from us.  We are trying to be instruments of His peace, for we know all good things come from God

Also, we know that division among Christians can so often be an obstacle as we try to live for Jesus in a fallen world.  We don't care if you are Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Jewish, Conservative, Liberal, Red, Yellow, Black or White--everyone is precious in His sight!  Please don't worry about any labels or allow differences in perspectives to deter you from encouraging those you know who need help to come to Central for relief.  The donations we have received have come from people all over the country and from all different religious backgrounds.  So many people are praying for North Alabama and just want to help in some way, and it has been so wonderful to see all these divisions fall away as we unite in helping our neighbors.

Galations 6:2 says, "Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the Law of Christ."  By encouraging all you know who need a little assistance to come and visit our Relief Center at Central, you are helping us live our mission of Loving Jesus, Loving Each Other and Serving the World.  We thank God for blessing us with this opportunity to serve, and we look forward to serving even more of our neighbors in the days ahead as we clean up and rebuild our communities and our state together.

Chainsaw Sharpening

Brian Black has found a man who has volunteered to sharpen the chains of anyone's chainsaw who is helping with recovery work.  If you have been using yours to cut trees and limbs, bring the chains in a bag and give leave them at the church building for Brian.  The guy is working on the assumption that your chains will continued to be used for recovery work.

"What a Blessing You Are!"

"What a blessing you are!" We have heard it numerous times, and it is ironic how they actually are the blessing to us. We have started the day off here helping multiple families. As our exposure grows, so do our needs. The immediate needs are for a queen sized bed frame. Also, mops, brooms, tall kitchen garbage bags, peanut butter, crackers, and laundry supplies.
As always, the generosity is amazing. Your willingness to serve is vital to this mission. And Our Lord is being glorified all the while!!!

Saturday Recap--Here Am I, Send Me!

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send?  And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here Am I! Lord, send me!'"  Isaiah 6:8

We had yet another God breathed day at Central today.  His blessings rained down upon us as His people served one another.  So many God moments, such as one of our families loading up baby supplies to take to University Church of Christ in Tuscaloosa, AL.  When they arrived, the church was about to run out, and we were able to help them serve those precious children in need.  Likewise, we had several requests for chainsaw work and limb clearing, and our men stepped up once again working tirelessly all day.  They came back from Tanner after working all morning and spent the afternoon helping families in East Limestone.  So many great guys and several of our young men stepping up and helping out today--we know they made a huge difference!

We have also been blessed with the opportunity to help a family in Phil Campbell who were devastated by the storm.  This family had to bury their mother, sister, daughter and son-in-law last week as well as having to deal with the tragedy of losing all their homes and the terror of living through the horrible storm.  We are happy to say they smiled today as a truck loaded down with supplies arrived at their temporary home!  What an honor to help these people who have lost so very much!

All in all, we helped another 30 families or more today in our Relief Center, and we are continuing to spread the word, with our volunteers handing out fliers at the Tanner High School FEMA meeting this afternoon.  Please see the previous posts about the supplies we currently need.

There are so many blessings that have come from this tragedy, and one of the greatest is the time we as a Central family have had to share with one another.  We have made so many new friends and strengthened the loving bond we all share.  It has truly been inspirational to see how tirelessly so many volunteers have been working to help our neighbors in need.  So many have stepped up, chipped in, filled in, loaded up, gone out, dug deep, and smiled through it all!  No job is too big or too small--these volunteers will do it all.  To all volunteers--THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Change of Plans

The plan was to begin winding things down today so that a few supplies could be distributed next week with a skeleton crew.  However, our wonderful ladies have stepped up and said they would like to keep things going  just like they are.  How amazing that is!  So, we will continue to accept all supplies, but especially need cleaning materials, laundry detergent, and hygiene items.  Also, there will be someone in the gym tomorrow in case folks want to pick up supplies then.  The hours Monday are the same as this week, 9am-4pm.  Please continue to tell people that we are there and please keep bringing supplies as you are able.  God is truly being glorified as people in this community are being served in a time of immense trial.

Loaves and Fishes Need Replenishing

Great things are happening at Central!  Two ladies brought a truck load of donations from Clarksville, TN today--they found us on Google and said they just wanted to help us out!  We have also been helping lots of families get set up in temporary housing.  We are helping them get their "new" lives started with food, cleaning supplies, furniture, linens, etc.  As soon as we have a need, someone shows up to meet it!  We have also been so happy to meet so many new friends who have been coming to volunteer and help us out--Ken, Jo, Jennifer and Donna--WE LOVE YOU!  Thank you for helping our neighbors!

Below is a list of donations we need today:

  • Kitchen Towels
  • Bath Towels
  • Blankets
  • Garbage Bags--large outdoor ones and kitchen size as well
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Pots and Pans
  • Baking Sheets
  • Pillows--they are going fast!
  • Peanut Butter
  • Cereal, Pop Tarts and Breakfast Bars
  • Work Gloves for our tree crews

We also need volunteers who know how to handle blow torches to cut steel at the Clem Mobile Home Park on Mooresville Road.  Come on--use your blow torch to help those in need!  Never thought I would be asking for a blow torch crew, but I believe that we will find one!

We are living the "loaves and fishes" story here at Central.  THANK YOU all for your donations, time, and your prayers for our neighbors in need!  God Bless You All!

WAFF Viedo of East Limestone Tornado

This is from WAFF's live weather coverage of the tornado in Limestone County.

Friday Recap

Today's recap will be a short one.  We are still amazed at the generosity of people who continue to give their time, money, and resources to help victims of the tornado.  We have served over 100 families in our distribution center this week.  I would not be surprised to see that number double tomorrow.  Today was much like the others.  More people showed up than did the previous day (we already had a line at 8:45am).  Supplies came in right on queue, and while a lot of things were going out, the tables never seemed to empty.  It was almost like a bread and fish moment (Matthew 14).  Joseph Griffin and Matt Hammond will be in charge of operations tomorrow.  Thanks so much to everyone!!!

Plan for Saturday and Beyond

We want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for their amazing donations and volunteer efforts.  There are just no words to explain how amazing it is to post a need and have it met within hours.  Truly, truly amazing.

Saturday will be our last big day for distribution.  We will be open from 9am-5pm and will have translators available for non-English speaking storm victims.  This does not mean that distribution will end tomorrow.  Saturday afternoon we need lots of people to help put donated items in boxes for easier access and transportation.  Any supplies left over Saturday evening will still be available at the church building next week for people to come by and pick up.  We are just trying to simplify and consolidate our resources as we scale down our operation.  Ideally items can be distributed next week by one or two people.  But again, nothing is being shipped out at the end of the day Saturday.  The only donations accepted after Saturday will be cleaning supplies and non-perishable foods.  Anyone needing further assistance can still contact the church office throughout the next few weeks and we will do our best to help.  Should someone receive one of our flyers tomorrow, it will still be valid.  They can still get the help they need.

Here is what we need help with tomorrow:
  • A crew will go out to assist with debris/tree removal.  If you would like to be a part of the crew, meet at the church building at 8am.  Roy Patton and Danny Cooke will have chainsaws but need strong backs to help carry limbs and other debris.
  • We anticipate more people coming through for supplies tomorrow than we had today.  This means we need a full crew to help them go through our gym and get the items they need.  The distribution center will be open tomorrow from 9am-5pm.
  • At the end of the day (probably between 4pm and 5pm) we will begin consolidating our resources.  Any remaining supplies will be grouped into boxes and left at the church building for distribution during the upcoming week.  We need A LOT of help for this.  If you are available, please show up around 3pm.
  • We will also be sending out a lot of furniture tomorrow.  We will need some heavy lifters to stay at the building to load the furniture onto trucks for people.  This is something we will need all day.
The distribution activities will not be taking place Sunday.  For more information, call 256-278-0884.

Saturday Update

We had thought about loading up trucks with supplies and taken them to the damaged areas on Saturday.  However, most of the people whose homes were damaged or destroyed have moved into temporary housing or are living with family members.  Therefore, we do not expect to find many people in those areas who would be in a position to receive supply packages.  The homes has simply been abandoned for the time being.  That means that we will not need trucks to deliver supplies on Saturday.  Virtually all distribution activity will take place at the church building.  We may deliver meals to workers, but not supplies.

Needs for Friday

Our needs for tomorrow are essentially the same as the rest of the week.  We need volunteers to help distribute from 9am-4pm, especially during the morning hours because some of our workers have prior commitments tomorrow.  We will have a translator on hand all day tomorrow and probably Saturday to assist those who speak only Spanish.  Saturday will be a big day, so please plan on helping then.  As needs arise tomorrow we will continue to post them on here and alert people via text message.  Here is our list of needed donations as of right now:
  • Trash bags
  • brooms/mops
  • bleach
  • cleaning supplies
As people come in, we may run low in certain areas, depending on what they take.  If you would like to donate any of these items, just stop by anytime.  Just a reminder: we are no longer taking water, sheets, clothes, or shoes.

Thursday Recap

Once again today, we were open from 9am-4pm and once again had more people come in than the day before.  We expect that trend to continue tomorrow and Saturday.  Here are a few of today's highlights.
  • This morning, our members were in a rental property seeing if it would be suitable for a family in need.  As they were looking around they observed the washer/dryer connection and commented on how we would need to find those appliances.  At that very moment, a cell phone rang and on the other end was an individual who had bought a new washer and dryer to donate.  God is good all the time.
  • We received numerous calls from churches outside the state of Alabama from as far north as Ohio and as far west as Louisiana.  They all say the same thing: we're getting resources together and want to know how we can help.  There was a couple from Ohio who drove their own 18-wheeler to Alabama, stopping along the way at churches of Christ to pick up furniture and supplies.  Even more amazing is that East Limestone has not been in the national spotlight as far as I know.  Most attention was placed on Tuscaloosa and Birmingham.  Therefore it is even more extraordinary that people of faith from around the country are calling us.  We appreciate it and praise God because He has provided so much!  Just knowing that there are Christians around the country thinking about and praying for people in our community who lost loved ones and property gives us such strength.
  • At one point we ran out of pillows.  We put out a text message and a blog post.  Fifteen minutes later, pillows began arriving and we now have a table full (even after those who came through later took some of them).  Thanks to everyone who posted that on Facebook or Twitter or anywhere else and made that happen so quickly.
  • The most amazing part of the day was when the first truck from Tennessee arrived around 3:00pm.  Three others followed shortly after.  What can only be described as a small army that appeared as if from nowhere unloaded the many, many, many pieces of furniture.  A special thanks to Coach Oakley and the AHS soccer team who came after school.  What should have taken hours took only minutes.  I did not keep track of it, but I believe all four trucks were unloaded in less than an hour.  Russ King then presented two checks and a large sum of cash to help with needs that have arisen from the storms.  The total deposited in the bank today was over $15,000.  That money will put numerous families in homes and the furniture will fill those homes.  Words can not describe the significance of such gifts.  This is especially significant because many of these churches are the same ones that suffered from the floods about one year ago.  Alabama sent help to them, and now they are sending help to Alabama.  "Bear one another's burdens and thereby fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2).
  • Morris Schrimsher came by the building today to pick out songs for Sunday's morning worship service.  For those of you who don't know, Morris and his wife Patty survived an EF5 tornado but their home did not.  They sheltered in a safe room constructed specifically for severe weather.  Their former home is featured in the video so many of you have watched.  We hope that we are not spoiling any surprises, but Morris has elected to sing "Til the Storm Passes By" which he says has a new meaning to him now.
Tomorrow will be another typical day, with us opening from 9am-4pm.  Volunteers are still needed during those hours.  Many of the people who have been working during the morning hours will be gone tomorrow, so we may need a few extra volunteers.  Of course, the morning does tend to be somewhat slower in terms of people coming to collect items.

We are so grateful for everyone who has contributed to this effort!

Furniture Trucks

We've had several people call and say they will be here at 3:30pm or shortly after to unload the four furniture truck coming from Nashville. Our hope is to unload the trucks quickly, and then split up into teams to deliver as much of it as we can.  Being able to deliver the furniture will depend on having a place to deliver it to.  So, if you have a truck and/or a strong back we'd love to have your help.

FEMA

We have two folks who have volunteered to assist people in making contact with FEMA.  They will not be helping with applications, but will have all the information needed to direct point people in the direction they need to go for their specific situation.  They will be available staring tomorrow afternoon.  If you need to talk to them, you will need to call and set up a time to meet: 256-278-0884.

Gearing Up for Saturday

We have had more people coming by to pick up supplies than we had yesterday.  We anticipate a few more tomorrow.  Saturday we are planning to make a big push to move these supplies.  In addition to opening the building from 9am-5pm, we will be loading up pick-ups with supplies to take into damaged areas.  If you have a truck and can volunteer to go out with supplies, please let us know.  Aso, we expect more people to come into the building since they are off work.  We will need more workers for the building than we have currently.  Finally, we will have chainsaw crews going out.  If you can help move more trees, we need you too.  More information including times will be posted soon.  Call 256-232-2014 if you'd like to help on Saturday.

FEMA Applications

We are in the process of figuring out how best to help people in our communities and may have an opportunity to train 2-3 people with very specific information to help those who need federal assistance go through the application process.  If you are interested in being one of those people, call 256-278-0884.  The people we train will need to be available at the church building in shifts to help the people who come in for that kind of aid.

Needs for Thursday

Once again, we will be distributing items at the building from 9am-4pm.  Coffee, soft drinks, snacks and sandwiches will be available for those who come by and are also available to safety officers and utility crews.  We need volunteers during this time to prepare food and also help walk with people through our supply tables to make sure they get what they need and assess whether or not they have greater needs.

There are several trucks loaded with furniture that will arrive around 3:30pm tomorrow.  The donation is from churches in Tennessee.  We need help to unload and then deliver some of the furniture to the families we have already placed in homes.  If you can come by and help, please do.  If you need to come late, call 256-232-2014 to let us know when to expect you.

Just a reminder, we are not dealing with clothing.  Please keep that in mind when making or soliciting donations.

Appliance/Lawnmowers Found

The refrigerator has been delivered to the church building and will be sent out probably tomorrow.  We have also had two push mowers brought to the building, and there is one more than will be delivered soon.  Great work everybody!

Wednesday Recap

God is good all the time.  Today offered ample evidence of that.  At 9am there were few people coming and some supplies were dwindling.  We received two shipments from the Monrovia Church of Christ, with the second containing boxes with supplies for a family of four and stocked cleaning buckets from the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief based out of Nashville.  We were also visited by the chief of police for the City of Athens.  He stopped by to take a look at what we had going on.  Less than an hour later, there was a large truck full of supplies that had arrived from Lawrenceburg, TN courtesy of Dura Automotive Supplies.  They had been driving all over north Alabama looking for a place to take the supplies they had collected and were directed to Central by a police officer who they stopped to ask for advice.  Much thanks to the Athens Police Department.  More flyers were distributed in hard hit communities and the bus was available in Tanner to pick up anyone needing to come to the church building.  By the end of the day, people were calling and arriving shortly after for pick-up.  Like during previous days, every family wanted to be sure not to take more than they truly needed (and in some cases took less than they needed despite our best efforts) so that there would be items left of others.  The attitude of folks in this community should make us all proud to call it our home.  We served more people today than we did yesterday and expect to serve more people tomorrow than we did today.  In talking to some other distribution centers in the area, there is some thinking that Saturday will be the busiest yet as folks are getting back to more normal routines and are off work.  If you aren't doing anything Saturday, we encourage you to find a place to help out.

Before concluding this post, we must say a few words about our amazing volunteers.  Some folks are taking off work and others are coming on their lunch breaks.  Everyone is working very diligently and in harmony with each other.  As a result, people are having their needs met and God is being glorified because of it.  None of what we are doing would be possible without ALL of you who have contributed the way you have, whether by spreading the word, volunteering to distribute, or donating supplies and money.  THANK YOU!!!

Surprise

An unexpected delivery came today from Dura Automotive Systems in Lawrenceburg, TN.  They said they had been driving all over North Alabama trying to find somewhere to deliver the supplies they collected.  A special thanks to the Athens police officer who pointed them in our direction.

Appliance Needed

One of the families we are placing in housing is in need of a refrigerator (cabinet style preferred).  If you have one to donate, please call 256-232-2014.

Truck Arrives

Folks from the churches of Christ in the Huntsville area arrived around 10:30am.  They brought a Uhaul with a variety of supplies.  Thanks to everyone who came out to help unload!  The supplies have been sorted and are ready for pick-up.  Spread the word that Central has plenty of supplies ready for pick-up.

Truck From Monrovia

The truck from Monrovia Church of Christ will be here close to 10am.  The 18-wheeler arrived there around 8am.  They will unload, sort, and then load up the pick-ups to come to Athens.

Comments Now Allowed

I just found that comments were only available for registered users.  I've changed the setting so now anyone can comment on this blog.

Needs for Wednesday

We placed two families in housing today and have two more that we hope to place soon.  If you have any lead on rental properties, please send them to will@central-churchofChrist.com.  Also, we need three lawnmowers for these families (it is a requirement at the places where they are staying).  If you would like to donate a used lawnmower in good condition or give money to purchase new lawnmowers, please contact the church office at 256-232-2014.

Tomorrow we will repeat what we did today.  We need volunteers to work in the gym distributing items as people come in.  Again, we expect to have more people tomorrow which means we need more volunteers.  Basically, we ask our volunteers to walk around the gym with the families who come in, help them gather supplies, talk with them, and offer to pray with them.  Often, you will have to be something of a salesperson because all of the families today were reluctant to take what they really needed because they wanted to make sure other people could get supplies.  We have tables set up with coffee, soft drinks, and snacks available, and it may be the case that the families would like to sit down, relax, and chat for a little while.  Any time you can work between 9am-4pm will be much appreciated.

Tomorrow morning between 9am-10am, a a couple of pick-up trucks from the Monrovia Church of Christ will arrive at the church building with more supplies.  It would be great to have folks here to unload the trucks quickly.  If you can come at 9am, we would greatly appreciate it.  If the truck comes later, we will send out a text and post it on this blog.

Once again, we will be delivering coffee to utility workers tomorrow morning.  If you would like to help with that, be at the building at 9am.

Even with the trucks from Monrovia, we are still asking people to bring supplies.  We are not taking clothing and do not need more water.  However, pretty much everything else needs replenishing.  Here's a list of some of the items:
  • Cleaning supplies
  • laundry detergent
  • diapers
  • baby forluma/food
  • wet wipes
  • hygiene products (deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, razors, shaving cream, feminine products, etc.)
  • toys in good shape
  • non-perishable food
  • towels
  • paper products (plates, napkins/towels, forks, spoons, toilet paper)
This is not a comprehensive list necessarily, but the idea is to get things that folks would need if their homes/vehicles were lost or damaged, if they have been unable to work due to the storm, or whose power is still out.

If you have any questions or suggestions, call Will Grice at 256-232-2239.

Tuesday Recap

Today was very busy  for us.  We want to first of all thank everyone who worked so diligently here at the building and around town to make sure that people who needed help could get it.  First let me recap a few things that took place;
  • We brewed coffee for folks coming to get supplies and also delivered it to utility workers in Tanner and East Limestone.  The deliveries were a big hit during the colder morning hours and we will do the same thing tomorrow.  We have also invited police officers and other emergency personnel to stop by between the hours of 9am-4pm for a coffee and snacks.  Please spread the word about this.
  • Word of our distribution center was spread by the major TV stations in Huntsville as well as all Cumulus radio stations.  WDRM make an announcement for us as well.  Fliers were distributed all over the county and the Red Cross came to visit twice, looking over our operation, asking what we needed, and promising to spread the word about what is available at our church building.  They referred one person to us this afternoon, and we expect that they will continue to do so as needs arise.  We calculate that the word got out today and that we will have more people tomorrow than we served today.
  • Two couples from Madison County drove to our building today to donate supplies.  They had found out about us over the internet and text messaging and just wanted to help.  One of those couples brought kitchen items (plates, utensils, spatulas, etc.) which we were able to give directly to a family we had just placed in a new home (their home was destroyed).  It was truly a situation in which the Lord simply provided what we needed at the moment.
  • A very nice lady came by on her way home from her grandmother's funeral in Florida.  She had found us online and saw that we were near interstate 65.  The family had planned on having a garage sale, but instead decided they wanted to donate their grandmothers belongings to storm victims.  Many of these items were also sent to the families placed in housing today.
  • As I mentioned, we placed two families in housing today, both in the same residence.  The house was in desperate need of cleaning and a group from Valley Church took care of that very quickly.  One of the rooms needed new paint and members from Central got that job done this afternoon.
So many people have contributed in so many ways...more than I can list.  Again, we are so incredibly thankful for those of you who have contributed in some way, not just today but since April 27.  Your hard work is making a huge difference in this community and God is being glorified as a result.

Work Opportunity

Troy Davis with Pride Construction is in immediate need of 20 reliable construction workers.  He can be reached at 256-874-1698.

Generators Found

We have the two generators that we need.

Also, one of the houses that we had found to put somebody in is not going to work out.  If you have any leads on places for rent, please email Will: will@central-ChurchofChrist.com

Generators Needed

We are now in need to two generators.  If you have any or know where we can find some, call 256-232-2014.

More Supplies Arrive

In addition to the supplies listed below, we have also received a massive shipment of large cardboard boxes for anyone who needs them.  We also have some toys available for children.  Please spread the word and let folks know that they can come to the church building between 9am-4pm this week.

Update on Housing Needs

One of the homes mentioned in the post below will be cleaned today.  We need volunteers to help paint.  If you are available to paint TODAY, call 256-232-2239.  The address is 420 Clinton Street.  CALL BEFORE YOU GO OVER.  Right now, we're waiting on the key.

Housing Needs

Here's an email update about housing needs that are being met and needs that still need to be addressed:

"Tornado Relief

-Secured housing for 2 families. Deposit paid and rent needed. Brookhill Elementary is taking up donations to pay for part of this.

-Tomorrow the key will be picked up. Arrangements have been made for a group to clean. (Group is from Valley; they called when we needed it and offered.) We need to fill the house with the following items.

Beds/bedding/blankets - 2 regular size for adults (parents)

-5 halves for children (bunks or whatever)

Maybe full- oldest son is a high schooler but space is an issue.

Table & Chairs

Sofa

Bathroom fixings

Kitchen fixings

This family wanted me to only request the beds but they need it all. They also want to come help clean on Wednesday because they are off work. One room really needs to be painted. Last residents had painted it wild strips. Maybe we could provide paint and help to paint on Wednesday. I think the teens would like this. He is a soccer player. I might be able to talk with Coach Oakley about some of the boys helping out….

Another opportunity-

We are also meeting to look at another house for another family. Property belongs to the same man as the above property. A family from Brookhill has offered to let them live with them while we get the other property in shape.  IF it is suitable. A family offered to help with rent if we could help with deposits. I am unsure they could pay the full amount but they want to help.  He also wants a job. He is a construction worker. Great family…My principal went by there and she said that the lady was cleaning the house and it was half into! Their home has always been spotless when I have visited.

These are the kind of people you want to help!"

So we may need help tomorrow painting and delivering furniture.  If you have furniture that you would like to donate, we can definitely use it.

Going Forward

Over the last several days, members of Central have joined together with others in our community and worked diligently to help those whose homes were destroyed or damaged by the tornado.  Teams with work gloves and chainsaws have gone out to clear trees from homes and salvage possession for the families living in them.  Our ladies have toiled daily over the stoves at the church building to provide meals for work crews and people who lost the ability to cook for themselves.  We want to thank everyone for their truly extraordinary efforts during these last few days.

Now, we are in a period of transition.  FEMA is expected to come in with heavy equipment to clean up the remaining debris and clear away un-salvageable homes.  With rain expected over the next several days, there will not be many more opportunities to go out and work in the community as we did this weekend.  Therefore our focus will be on distributing supplies at the church building.  A truck from the 2nd Street Church of Christ in Pulaski, TN arrived this afternoon with more supplies (they also made a delivery yesterday) and there is the possibility that the Church of Christ Disaster Relief will bring another supply truck on Thursday.  The supplies have been sorted and are on tables in the gym.  The church building will be opened from 9am-4pm this week for individuals or families who need the following supplies:
  • food
  • bottled water
  • towels
  • dish cloths
  • batteries
  • laundry detergent
  • personal hygiene items  (deodorant, toothpaste, feminine products, etc)
  • baby food
  • diapers
  • cleaning supplies
  • paper plates, towels, cups
If anyone is unable to get to the church building, they should call the office at 256-232-2014 and we will arrange transportation for them.  Church members wishing to bring any of these supplies may do so any time between 9am-4pm.  While we have a variety of items, we need quantity, so please stop by the store and pick up a few things to bring if you can.  We are not accepting clothing donations.

There very well may be other needs that arise during the week.  If you would like to volunteer to help, you have two options.  You can sign up to come assist people during the day who come to get supplies or you can ask to be put on the "call if needed" list for those unanticipated needs.  We will likely have two shipments coming in Thursday afternoon (furniture and supplies), and will need folks to help unload.  I will post specific times as soon as they are available.  If you want to volunteer in any of these areas, please call Will Grice at 256-278-0884 to let him know when to expect you.  Check back soon for more information.

New Blog

On April 27, 2011 the state of Alabama was devastated by numerous long-track tornadoes, many being EF4 or EF5.  Limestone County was hit incredibly hard by an EF4 that tore a path of destruction through southern and eastern parts of the county.  The Central Church of Christ in Athens was spared, but many of our members, friends, and families suffered loss.  This blog will be the go-to place for current information about our recovery efforts.  Anyone can check here to find out what all has been done, find assistance, and also find ways to volunteer.

If you would like to receive text messages with current and time-critical information, you can text centralaid to 84483.  You will then receive a confirmation text telling you that you have been subscribed.  This is by far the fastest and easiest way to find out about opportunities to help.
